From hospital waste to fuel. L'San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital in Orbassano (TO) experiments with the solution to an age-old problem, that of disposal of hazardous medical waste with infectious risk products internally, with a system that will allow to obtain non-fossil fuel usable as energy in some industrial processes. The project is developed in collaboration with Photorecoveries, a Turin-based company specializing in the treatment of special waste.

In time of Smart City, the "smart cities" that use technology to make life easier for the inhabitants and limit the impact on the environment, this pilot experience of management of infectious hazardous medical waste introduces the concept of Smart Hospital.

The pilot system conceived and developed by Fotorecuperi for the San Luigi Gonzaga in Orbassano - which is being discussed today December 3 in a conference at the headquarters of SITE Interport Company of Turin - has been studied and tested with the contribution of Polytechnic of Turin. This is a plant that has significantly lower construction costs than the plants of waste-to-energy, with benefits for users in terms of greater eco-compatibility and savings. It is estimated that with the introduction of the new system the management of hospital waste del San Luigi will cost 15-30% less.

"We believe that the pilot experience undertaken at San Luigi - said the ASO San Luigi Gonzaga General Manager, Remo Urani can represent an important event because it responds to the need to keep up with a world in constant evolution, in search of increasingly better solutions at sustainable costs, to pursue the goals of lower production, danger and environmental impact indicated by EU and national legislation. Treating medical waste with these principles, and doing it by pursuing the criteria of effectiveness and efficiency, I believe can represent a good encouragement for our initiative ".

So far the most advanced system among the solutions proposed by the market for disposal of hospital waste provides for the packaging and transport of waste with the use of reusable and regenerable containers, and disposal in waste-to-energy plants intended exclusively for the treatment of hazardous medical waste with infectious risk.

The new system allows the waste sterilization and conversion to non-fossil fuel. The process allows to eliminate the infectious danger and to produce a material that is unrecognizable and manageable without risk, reusable in the energy field and identified by the same standard as Fuel from waste (C.D.R.). This material can be used in those activities that require fuels not deriving from fossil substances such as cement factories, metallurgical companies and district heating plants. The savings for the hospital in terms of management costs - between transport and disposal - are estimated at around 15-30% at the end of the experimental course.
